WHY:             Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has been caring for the brown bear, Celebes macaques and leopards since they were removed from the Thompson Farm on October 19, 2011. They have remained in the care of the Zoo’s animal experts at the request of the State of Ohio until a quarantine order was lifted on April 30, 2012. Since the quarantine order has expired the Zoo has no legal right to prevent the return of the animals to Marian Thompson.

Legislation that would restrict private ownership of exotic animals has passed the Ohio Senate and is now being heard in the House of Representatives. Zoo officials encourage lawmakers to pass a bill quickly to ensure public safety and protect the welfare of animals.
